The odds are against this intriguing pair. A Japanese wife and her Black husband struggle against the headwinds of racism, cultural misunderstandings, and the passage of time that have worn them and their 30-year marriage to the bone. But she’s not content to toss it all out like a pot damaged in the red-hot kiln.

William Earl Ray

William (Bill) Earl Ray is celebrating his 46th year as an actor/director as a theatrical artist. Acting Stage credits include, Seven Guitars, The Piano Lesson, Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, Two Trains Running, The Gospel at Colonus, Miss Evers Boys, Cobb, Master Harold and the Boys, Home, The Amen Corner, Ceremonies in Dark Old Men, A Soldier’s Play, The Whipping Man, Blues for an Alabama Sky among others.

His directing credits include – Seven Guitars, A Song for Coretta, Neat, No Niggers, No Jews, No Dogs (The No Play), Two Trains Running, Skeleton Crew, Lonely Planet, King Liz, Ain’t Misbehavin’, A Raisin in the Sun and Having Our Say (Starring Ms. Irma P. Hall – Big Mama of Soul Food Fame), Agnes of God, The Heiress, Working: A Musical, The Gifts of the Magi, The Gospel at Colonus among others. TV and Film credits include – The Tuskegee Airmen, The Gas Café, Cadillac Ranch, The Temp, Dr. Giggles, Terror in the Towers, Better Off Dead, Walker Texas Ranger, Con Alma, See Mee, Big Foot, Lesson, Honey, and Metal admitted to the Austin Film Festival, the Portland Film Festival, and the Miami Black Film Festival.

William is a member of Actors Equity, Screen Actors Guild, and a graduate of The Evergreen State College with a BA in Liberal arts.

Kathy Hsieh

Kathy Hsieh (she/her) is an award-winning actor, writer and director from Seattle. Her more recent credits include Seattle Shakespeare Company’s Henry IV (Henry IV), Hamlet (Gertrude), As You Like It (Phebe), Romeo & Juliet (Nurse), The Tempest (Gonzalo), and The Comedy of Errors (Egeon, Pinch, Balthazar); Strawberry Theatre Workshop’s Gloria: A Life (Gloria and Ensemble); Pony World Theatre’s Not Our Town (Mrs. Gibbs); The Shattered Glass Project’s Want (Ruby); Book-It Rep’s The Bonesetter’s Daughter (Old Widow Lau, Sister Yu) and their audio version of The Three Musketeers (Constance, Kitty); and Sound Theatre’s Gaslight (Bella). In Portland, she was most recently seen in Gambatte (Grandmother) at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center.

She was nominated for an Elly Award for acting for Chinglish in Nevada City, won Footlight and Gypsy Awards for acting in Chinglish at ArtsWest, received a 2019 Gypsy Award for acting in Washer/Dryer with SIS Productions, and honored with the Gregory Award for Sustained Achievement in Theatre in 2017. She has been honored by the National Association of Asian American Professionals in Seattle as their Artist of the Year and by The Seattle Theater Writers Gypsy Awards with A Special Award of Recognition for Excellence in Playwriting.

Dmae Lo Roberts is a two-time Peabody award-winning biracial Taiwanese-American writer, director, theatre and media artist. Locally she has won two Drammy awards and the Oregon Book Award. Her plays have been produced at IFCC, Artists Rep, Portland Repertory Theatre, Northwest Asian American Theatre in Seattle and East/West Players in LA. Her recent short films have won over a dozen film festivals world-wide.

As an actor she’s appeared on the stages of Artists Rep, OSF-Portland, Profile Theatre, and was a company member of Tygre’s Heart Shakespeare Company.

With Samson Syharath, she co-founded Theatre Diaspora, Oregon’s first and only AAPI theatre, as a project of MediaRites, a nonprofit multicultural production organization, where she is the executive producer.

Roberts more recently directed The Journal of Ben Uchida and Where The Mountain Meets The Moon at Oregon Children’s Theatre. She will be directing the touring production of Shizue: An American Story, in which she wrote the libretto, at Portland Opera.
